About

Who Am I?

My name is Wyatt Allred, and I am currently a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am an assured admit to UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism, where I am a Media and Journalism major with a concentration in AD/PR studies.

High School

My experience with journalism dates back to the 7th grade, when I first began taking classes in the subject. This continued all throughout my high school career, where I expanded my journalism studies by joining my high school’s newspaper in the 11th grade. I began as a staff writer, working under an editor and writing stories about the latest events at our school. My role changed in my senior year, as I was awarded a managing editor position, the second highest position awarded on our newspaper staff. With this position, I was responsible for editing the copy of the six staff writers assigned to me and assisting in the print and online production of the newspaper.

College

As an assured admit into UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism, I was placed into the program much earlier in my college career than many others. As one of the few freshman admitted into the Hussman School, I was assigned into two of the school’s core classes: MEJO 153 (Writing and Reporting) and MEJO 121 (Introduction to Digital Storytelling). Each of these courses have afforded me with the opportunity to learn newfound skills. In MEJO 153, I have learned about ethics in journalism and I’ve been able to improve the organizational structure in my writing. In MEJO 121, I practiced basic film-making skills and learned about coding and all that goes behind web design.

Beyond Carolina

In the future, I hope to leverage my studies at Hussman and pair it with my love of sports to find a career that adequately combines both of my passions. I particularly chose to major in Advertisement and PR due to the plethora of opportunities it allows for in the sports industry. Working in the newfound and growing college NIL industry is something I have a desire to do, as it would provide me with the opportunity to work with college athletes, an area I have a lot of knowledge about. Through my education at the University of North Carolina, I will be able to provide myself with the opportunities to succeed in life after college.
